Vice President Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah, SC, JA (Retired), played a central role in representing Malawi during the virtual Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit on 15th December 2025, where discussions focused on the escalating political and security crisis in the Republic of Madagascar.
In her opening remarks, she extended a warm welcome to the representatives of His Majesty King Mswati III of Eswatini, the Incoming Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, and Her Excellency Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania, the Outgoing Chairperson of the Organ, highlighting the critical importance of regional solidarity in addressing political instability.
Vice President Ansah also acknowledged Honourable Dr George T. Chaponda, MP, Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, along with all cabinet ministers, distinguished members of the SADC Organ Troika, and officials of the SADC Secretariat, expressing gratitude for their dedication and active participation in efforts to resolve the crisis.

She highlighted the deployment of the Joint Technical Fact-Finding Mission to Madagascar from 22nd to 27th October 2025, which engaged a wide spectrum of stakeholders to investigate the causes of protests that led to loss of life and property damage. She commended Mrs Mary Kachale, Principal Secretary, and the entire mission team for their professionalism, diligence, and commitment in executing their mandate.
During her closing remarks, Vice President Ansah stressed the urgent need to implement the recommendations from the mission, urging all stakeholders to adhere strictly to timelines and demonstrating SADC’s solidarity and accountability to the Malagasy people.
She emphasised Malawi’s leadership role as Chair of the Organ and called on regional and international partners to provide their full support and guidance, noting that Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Chairperson of the SADC Organ, will closely monitor progress on the agreed actions.
Vice President Ansah underlined that the summit’s decisions are not only essential for resolving the immediate crisis but also for reinforcing the region’s image of unity and commitment to the people of Madagascar.
She thanked all participants for their engagement, dedication, and valuable contributions throughout the summit, acknowledging the collective effort required to achieve lasting solutions.
In her remarks, she urged continuous collaboration, dialogue, and oversight to ensure the restoration of peace, law, and order in Madagascar, stressing that the work of SADC must be visible and effective to all stakeholders involved.

Finally, Vice President Ansah concluded by expressing hope that the summit would mark a decisive step in stabilising Madagascar, reaffirming Malawi’s commitment to regional peace, and thanking everyone for their tireless efforts and attention to this critical issue.
