The Malawian social media space has gone buzzing over Vice-President Jane Ansah’s post-Christmas trip to the UK, with critics slashing the move as a “waste of resources” amid economic struggles.
Ansah is due to undertake a private trip on Friday to the UK.
Ansah’s office claims the trip is private, but reports of a 15-member entourage and hefty costs have sparked outrage.
A leaked letter to the Malawi High Commission in London, signed by Secretary for Foreign Affairs Chauncy Simwaka, lists the entourage, including accountants, security personnel, and assistants.
The vice-president’s government, in power since October, had pledged economic competence and austerity measures, including reduced travel for senior officials.
President Peter Mutharika promised prudent management, saying his government wouldn’t be a “feast” for officials.
The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) calls the trip “deeply troubling”, citing “double standards” as Malawians face hardship.
“While Malawians tighten belts, leaders exempt themselves,” HRDC Chairperson Michael Kayiyatsa said.
Ansah’s office however disputes the leaked documents on costs, calling them false.
“We condemn spread of false info,” press secretary Richard Mveriwa said, but didn’t address the entourage size.
So far, Malawians have taken to the social media seeking the trip cancelled.
There has yet to be a government statement on the matter.
