Communities vulnerable to seasonal flooding have been advised to take precautionary steps by moving away from high-risk zones as rains intensify, with leaders warning that many disasters can be avoided through early decisions.
The appeal was delivered by Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah during a government maize distribution exercise held at Kaporo Primary School Ground in Karonga District under Senior Chief Kilupula.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Ansah emphasized that disaster preparedness begins at community level and that relocating in good time can prevent unnecessary suffering.
She further cautioned those managing the relief programme against abuse, making it clear that the maize is intended solely for households facing genuine food shortages.
Paramount Chief Kyungu welcomed the support from government, describing it as timely assistance for communities affected by the lean season.
The traditional leader also reminded beneficiaries that the maize is not for sale, urging them to use it responsibly to support their families.
Member of Parliament for Karonga Songwe, Mungasulwa Mwambande, said the intervention comes at a critical time when many families are struggling to secure food.
He noted that the relief will help ease pressure on vulnerable households as they await the next harvest.
Department of Disaster Management Affairs Commissioner Wilson Moleni echoed calls for discipline and fairness in the exercise.
Moleni urged officials on the ground to ensure that the most vulnerable households are prioritized so that the programme delivers meaningful impact.
