The African Union Commission Chairperson, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the historic peace agreement signed today between President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, describing it as a defining moment in the quest for lasting peace, security, and stability in the Great Lakes region.
The agreement, signed in Washington, DC, signals a decisive shift after years of strained relations and recurring conflict dynamics that have destabilized communities on both sides of the border. According to the AU Chairperson, the commitment demonstrated by the two leaders reflects a new willingness to prioritize peace and regional cooperation over longstanding grievances.
Youssouf acknowledged the constructive and direct support of the United States, highlighting the personal engagement of President Donald Trump, whose involvement helped create the diplomatic momentum that made today’s outcome possible. He also commended the State of Qatar, whose sustained diplomatic backing and readiness to support African-led initiatives added a critical layer of support to the peace process.
Witnessing the signing alongside other African Heads of State, the Chairperson applauded what he described as “decisive and sustained leadership” from key regional actors. He paid special tribute to President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo, whose ongoing facilitation helped maintain dialogue channels, and President João Lourenço of Angola, who led earlier mediation efforts that kept the process on track. Youssouf also highlighted the complementary roles played by leaders of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Calling on all parties to honor both the letter and spirit of the agreement, the AU Chairperson emphasized that its success will depend on firm political will and faithful implementation. He expressed confidence that this moment can become a genuine foundation for reconciliation, cross-border cooperation, and sustainable peace benefiting millions across the region.
The African Union Commission reaffirmed its readiness to accompany the DRC and Rwanda, along with regional mechanisms, in advancing the next stages of the peace process. For the AU, this agreement stands not only as a diplomatic achievement, but as a critical opportunity to reshape the trajectory of the Great Lakes region toward stability and shared prosperity.
