The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to safer urban mobility as it joined the Freetown City Council (FCC) and development partners at a reception honouring Corine Mauch, the Mayor of Zurich, who is in Freetown to assess progress on the City-to-City Regeneration Project.
Hosted by Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, the event brought together government officials, civil society groups and development partners to review achievements under the five-year Freetown–Zurich partnership. Backed by CHF 2.5 million from the City of Zurich, the initiative is transforming Freetown’s Central Business District with improved pedestrian pathways, parking systems, lighting, green spaces and strengthened public infrastructure.
Representing SLRSA, Secretary to the Authority and the Board, Abu-bakarr Sheriff Esq., commended the FCC for advancing a modern urban development agenda aligned with national road safety priorities. He emphasized the importance of the “safe system approach” and reiterated SLRSA’s commitment to ensuring road safety remains central to the regeneration project.

Sheriff also encouraged stronger public–private collaboration to build safer mobility systems, noting that sustainable urban development must prioritize the protection of all road users.
The reception highlighted growing momentum behind Freetown’s urban transformation efforts, driven by international cooperation and local innovation aimed at building a safer, greener and more inclusive city.
