Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has announced plans to take legal action against former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni.
The planned action relates to an injunction that reportedly prevented Bushiri’s daughter from travelling for urgent medical treatment in 2021.
Bushiri revealed the details in a statement issued on his official Facebook page.
He said his eight-year-old daughter was scheduled to travel from Malawi to Kenya for critical medical care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The travel was blocked by an injunction reportedly obtained by Kayuni, which prevented her from leaving the country.
Bushiri alleged that Kayuni claimed to have received directives from officials within the South African government to act in that manner.
He said his daughter was detained at the airport for five days while his legal team worked to have the injunction lifted.
“By the time the court granted permission for her to travel, it was too late, she had lost her life,” Bushiri said in the statement.
He added that while his family has forgiven Kayuni, “forgiveness does not remove accountability.”
Bushiri also expressed gratitude to child rights organisations, legal practitioners, and human rights advocates who have offered support during the ordeal.
Steve Kayuni is yet to comment on the matter or respond to Bushiri’s allegations.
The announcement has reignited debates around legal authority, bureaucratic intervention, and the responsibilities of officials in cases involving urgent medical needs.
Bushiri’s statement underscores the tension between forgiveness and the demand for justice in situations where alleged administrative actions have severe consequences.
