President Mutharika is taking decisive steps to get Malawi back on the rails

In a decisive move aimed at controlling government spending, President Peter Mutharika's administration has announced a series of stringent measures that will be enforced until the next financial year.

These new policies, outlined in a memo from Chief Secretary to the Government, Justin Saidi, target significant areas of public expenditure, including vehicle procurement, recruitment, travel, and operational costs across government departments.

Effective immediately, the government has placed a moratorium on the procurement of new motor vehicles and high-value assets, allowing exceptions only with prior approval from the Office of the President and Cabinet. This decision is part of broader efforts to optimize resource allocation within the civil service.

Recruitment activities have also been halted, with new hires subject to case-by-case approval, prioritizing only critical and essential roles. Additionally, international travel for government delegations has been limited, with a specific emphasis on eliminating top-up allowances for trips funded by donors. "These measures are essential to ensure fiscal responsibility during challenging times," Saidi stated in the memo.

Other cost-saving initiatives include a 30 percent reduction in fuel allocations for ministers and a cap on embassy staff, which will now be restricted to five personnel, including the ambassador or high commissioner. Meetings are now mandated to take place within department premises, promoting virtual engagement where necessary to minimize expenses.
