The Centre for Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has urged former President Lazarus Chakwera to provide a detailed explanation of how 67 billion kwacha was spent within just six months.
Speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa expressed serious concern over what he described as irregular financial management under the previous administration.
Namiwa emphasised that citizens have the right to understand how such a massive public fund was allocated and used, especially amid ongoing economic hardships in the country.
He highlighted that transparency and accountability are essential for effective governance, and any doubts over the handling of public money must be addressed promptly.
The CDEDI leader warned that leaving the K67 billion expenditure unaccounted for could undermine public confidence in both political leaders and national institutions.
Beyond the budget issues, Namiwa also called for an independent and thorough investigation into the plane crash that resulted in the death of the Vice President.
He stated that Malawians are entitled to the full facts of the tragedy, noting that speculation continues due to a lack of official information.
Namiwa added that a conclusive report would not only provide closure to the nation but also reinforce accountability in handling national emergencies.
He further underscored that openness in the investigation process would signal the government’s commitment to democratic principles and good governance.
CDEDI’s demand contributes to mounting public pressure for authorities to clarify unresolved issues surrounding both the financial spending and the fatal air accident.
The organisation has called on political leaders to uphold integrity, protect citizen rights, and foster public trust as Malawi navigates ongoing economic and governance challenges.
This call from CDEDI highlights the growing expectation among Malawians for honesty, transparency, and accountability in public office, particularly on matters affecting national stability and public resources.
