The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on securing the bid to host the 32nd Conference of the Parties (COP32) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), calling the achievement “a powerful endorsement of Africa’s climate leadership and Ethiopia’s proven commitment to sustainable development.”
In a statement released from Addis Ababa, the AUC Chairperson said Ethiopia’s victory underscores Africa’s unwavering resolve to shape global climate policy and highlights the country’s long-standing record in championing environmental action.
“This remarkable achievement reflects Africa's commitment to climate action and Ethiopia's longstanding leadership in advancing sustainable development on the continent,” Youssouf said.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia has spearheaded bold climate initiatives — from ambitious reforestation to the transformative Green Legacy programme — that continue to inspire action across Africa and beyond.”
Ethiopia’s Track Record Strengthens Its Case
The Chairperson emphasized that Ethiopia’s selection was no surprise, noting its consistent success in hosting major high-level summits, including the Africa Climate Summit, top-tier global development meetings, and numerous continental conferences.
“Ethiopia has repeatedly demonstrated capacity, experience, and organisational excellence,” he said.
“Its institutional strength has made it a trusted hub for global and continental engagements.”
Addis Ababa: A Global Multilateral Capital
Home to the African Union Headquarters and dozens of international organizations, Addis Ababa is already one of the world’s leading diplomatic capitals. Hosting COP32, Youssouf noted, reaffirms its critical role in shaping global dialogue on climate solutions.
The AUC Chairperson described Addis Ababa as a city synonymous with multilateralism and cooperation.
“Its selection as host city for COP32 reaffirms its vital role in fostering global cooperation on the most pressing issues of our time.”
AU Pledges Full Support for a Successful COP32
Looking ahead, the AUC expressed readiness to collaborate closely with Ethiopia, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and global partners to deliver a highly inclusive, impactful climate summit.
“The African Union Commission looks forward to ensuring a successful, outcomes-driven COP32 that advances Africa’s climate priorities and strengthens global solidarity in the fight against climate change,” Youssouf affirmed.
COP32 will mark a major milestone in Africa’s climate diplomacy, with Ethiopia poised to showcase the continent’s environmental innovations, climate resilience strategies, and unified voice on global climate governance.
