Kampala, 17 October 2025–TotalEnergies EP Uganda, in partnership with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Uganda Chapter, convened over 300 youth at the second Youth in Energy Conference, held at the Sheraton Hotel Kampala under the theme Awareness to Action: Youth Shaping Uganda’s Energy Transition”. The event aimed to empower young Ugandans to take a proactive role in advancing the country’s sustainable energy future.
Delivering the keynote address, Marieme-Sav Sow, Vice President of Engagement & Advocacy at TotalEnergies, emphasised the role of youth involvement in the energy transition: “The energy transition presents a generational opportunity for Africa’s youth to redefine development through innovation, resilience, and action. However, opportunities meet those who show up — those who volunteer, take internships seriously, and use platforms like this to learn and grow.

With over 75% of Uganda’s population under 30, young people are not just beneficiaries of change; they drive it. Our role is to empower them with the tools, mentorship, and partnerships to turn awareness into action.”
Other key speakers from the Uganda National Oil Company, Petroleum Authority of Uganda, TotalEnergies EP Uganda, and Makerere Innovation Hub shared insights into career pathways, innovation ecosystems, and policy frameworks shaping Uganda’s energy future.
Representing the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, Gloria Sebikari, the Corporate Affairs Manager, highlighted the central role of youth in ensuring inclusive development.
“The future of Uganda’s energy sector rests on the shoulders of young people. As a government, we are encouraged to see youth participate in shaping this transition from acquiring technical and soft skills to embracing innovation and entrepreneurship. Our commitment is to ensure that youth participation in the energy transition is inclusive, informed, and transformative.”
Peter Muliisa, the General Counsel at the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), provided a national perspective on Uganda’s energy transition, stressing the country’s focus on balancing resource development with environmental responsibility.
“Uganda’s energy transition must address both energy poverty and economic poverty. We are developing our oil and gas resources responsibly, with one of the lowest carbon emissions per barrel globally, to ensure that our people benefit while protecting the environment. The youth must equip themselves with knowledge, engage in the dialogue, and take an active role in driving a just and sustainable transition.”

The Youth in Energy Conference 2025 reaffirmed TotalEnergies EP Uganda’s commitment to aligning its energy transition with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 7, and 8, which focus on quality education, affordable and clean energy, and decent work, respectively. It also reinforced TotalEnergies EP Uganda’s belief that innovation, sustainability, and youth leadership are central to Uganda’s energy future.
Beyond innovation, skills development, entrepreneurship, and sustainability, the conference brought together university students, entrepreneurs, innovators, sector experts, and policy influencers from across Uganda’s energy landscape to explore inclusive pathways for youth leadership in the energy transition.
