Former President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta has paid a heartfelt tribute to former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, calling him a brother, a patriot, and a steadfast advocate for national unity and justice.
In a deeply emotional condolence message following Raila’s passing in Kerala, India, on Wednesday, Kenyatta expressed his profound sorrow over the loss of a man who not only influenced Kenya’s political landscape but also redefined what it means to lead and reconcile.
“My heart is heavy, and I feel a deep personal grief. The news of Raila’s death has created a silence that resonates throughout our nation, a silence that once echoed with his powerful voice and unwavering conviction,” Kenyatta shared.
Looking back on their long and intricate political journey, Kenyatta recognized that Raila was “more than just a political ally” and had become “a significant part of my own path, both in public service and in life.”
He reminisced about their evolution from fierce rivals to partners in the quest for unity, a transformation marked by the historic 2018 Handshake, which signaled a new chapter in Kenya’s political narrative after years of division.
“That journey from being fierce opponents to partners in the spirit of ‘Handshake’ unity revealed the true essence of the man. I witnessed his relentless passion for our country, his deep-rooted belief in justice, and his remarkable ability to prioritize national peace over personal ambition,” he reflected.
Kenyatta praised Raila’s bravery, intellect, and dedication to democracy, describing him as a leader who inspired others to think critically, stand firm in their beliefs, and always prioritize Kenya.
“Baba, as we affectionately called him, was a man who pushed you to refine your own ideas, urging you to defend your views with vigor and passion,” Kenyatta added.
He expressed that Odinga’s most significant legacy wasn’t just in his political struggles but in the peace and unity he fostered among the people of Kenya.
“His legacy goes beyond the political battles he engaged in; it’s woven into the very essence of our nation,” Kenyatta remarked.
In his message to his wife Mama Ida Odinga, their children, and the entire Jaramogi family, Kenyatta offered his sincere condolences, acknowledging the sacrifices they made by sharing Raila with the country throughout his life. “
You have shared Baba with Kenya for a lifetime, and we grieve alongside you. We’ve lost a father to the nation, a dedicated advocate for the people, and a true son of Kenya,” he stated.
“Rest in peace, my brother. Your work here is complete, but your legacy will always resonate.”
