Jackson urged Cameroon’s Electoral Commission, judiciary, and Constitutional Council to uphold full transparency and accountability, and to ensure that the final results reflect the genuine will of the Cameroonian people

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Jonathan Jackson has issued a strong statement expressing concern over the conduct and aftermath of Cameroon’s recent presidential elections, calling for restraint, transparency, and respect for the will of the people.

“I commend the people of Cameroon for their continued commitment to democracy, as demonstrated by their participation in the recent presidential election,” Jackson said. “The United States’ longstanding partnership with Cameroon is rooted in shared values, including respect for democratic governance, the rule of law, and human rights.”

However, the Congressman voiced unease over reports of limited political freedoms, media restrictions, and voter disenfranchisement in conflict-affected regions. “These irregularities could undermine confidence in the electoral process,” he noted.

Jackson urged Cameroon’s Electoral Commission, judiciary, and Constitutional Council to uphold full transparency and accountability, and to ensure that the final results reflect “the genuine will of the Cameroonian people.”

“I call on all political actors to exercise restraint, respect due process, and resolve any disputes peacefully through established legal and constitutional mechanisms,” he said. “Violence or intimidation has no place in a democratic process.”

The Illinois congressman also reaffirmed his commitment to work with the Government of Cameroon, civil society, the African Union, and international partners to support post-election peacebuilding and dialogue.

“Our collective goal should be to strengthen democratic institutions, promote good governance, and advance peace, stability, and respect for human rights for all Cameroonians,” Jackson concluded.

Our collective goal should be to strengthen democratic institutions, promote good governance, and advance peace, stability, and respect for human rights for all Cameroonians, says Congressman Jackson here at an African day event with Congresswoman Cherfilus

Cameroon held its presidential elections earlier this month amid heightened political tensions and logistical challenges in parts of the country’s anglophone regions. As results remain contested, international observers and partners have urged calm and adherence to due process to safeguard democratic integrity.

Congressman Jonathan Jackson’ statement expressing concern in the aftermath of Cameroon Presidential elections and called on all political actors to exercise restraint, respect due process and the will of the people.

I commend the people of Cameroon for their continued commitment to democracy, as demonstrated by their participation in the recent presidential election. United States. longstanding partnership with Cameroon is rooted in shared values, including respect for democratic governance, the rule of law, and human rights.

I am, however, concerned by reports indicating limited political freedoms, restrictions on civil society and the media, voter disenfranchisement in conflict-affected regions, and other irregularities that could undermine confidence in the electoral process. I urge the Electoral Commission, the judiciary, and the Constitutional Council to ensure full transparency and accountability in accordance with Cameroon’s electoral code, and to allow for the prompt and credible publication of results that reflect the will of the Cameroonian people.

I call on all political actors to exercise restraint, respect due process, and resolve any disputes peacefully through established legal and constitutional mechanisms and dialogue. Violence or intimidation has no place in a democratic process.

I reaffirm my commitment to work with the Government of Cameroon, civil society, the African Union, and international partners to prevent conflict, support peaceful post elections dialogue, strengthen democratic institutions, promote good governance, advance peace, stability, and respect for human rights for all Cameroonians.
