The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has unveiled two major initiatives aimed at eliminating gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) in workplaces worldwide.
The initiatives-the Gender-Based Violence Centre of Expertise and the Respect@Work Program were rolled out in a ceremony held in Nairobi, spearheaded by Gillian Rogers, IFC’s Principal Country Officer in Kenya.
The new programs highlight IFC’s dedication to fostering safer, more inclusive, and equitable workplaces. These initiatives aim to promote gender equality, boost business performance, and tap into the full economic potential of women and marginalised communities.
The Gender-Based Violence Centre of Expertise will act as a global hub for sharing knowledge, providing IFC clients and private sector partners with access to practical toolkits, specialised training, and advisory services. Its mission is to assist organisations in implementing policies that create safer, more respectful workplaces and resilient communities.
In addition to this, the Respect@Work Program—an extension of IFC’s Kenya2Equal Initiative in collaboration with the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) will offer companies a peer-learning platform to exchange best practices, gain insights from real-world case studies, and align with international standards like ILO Convention 190.
IFC has stressed that workplaces free from violence and harassment not only safeguard employees but also lead to better business results, including increased productivity, enhanced reputations, and improved talent retention.
“Gender-based violence and harassment is not just a personal issue, it is a workplace issue, and one that demands urgent and collective action,” said Gillian Rogers.
“The evidence is clear: workplaces free from violence and harassment are more productive, innovative, and inclusive. IFC is committed to partnering with the private sector to build safe, respectful work environments where every worker feels valued and empowered.”
With these initiatives, IFC aims to catalyse a global movement toward zero tolerance for gender-based violence in workplaces, recognising that business success and human dignity go hand in hand.
