At just 13 years old, Vivian Frank has accomplished what many adults only dream of: writing and publishing a book. Her debut novel, Bonding, isn’t just a literary achievement — it’s a heartfelt message about family love, connection, and the importance of emotional ties in a world often consumed by material wealth. With over 100 copies sold across Tanzania, Vivian is not just making headlines — she’s making history.
A Pan African Visions Bureau Chief sat down with the rising young author to learn more about her inspiration, challenges, and what it’s like to become a role model before even finishing secondary school.
Vivian, first of all — congratulations! You’re just 13 and already a published author. Can you take us back to the moment you decided to write Bonding?
Thank you! It started with a flash fiction competition at school, which I ended up winning. That experience lit something in me — I realized I could tell stories that matter. I’ve also seen many wealthy families around me that, despite having everything, lack connection and love. So, I decided to write Bonding to inspire families to reconnect, love each other, and grow closer emotionally.
What sparked the idea, and did you ever imagine it would become a real book?
I always felt like I was meant to write — it’s something deep inside me. I knew the story needed to be told, but what surprised me was how quickly people responded to it. I didn’t expect it to sell out so fast! Over 100 copies have already been bought across Tanzania. That’s still hard to believe sometimes.
Writing a whole book at your age is no small feat. What was the writing process like for you?
Honestly, it wasn’t easy. I was scared at first because I wasn’t experienced like other writers. Writing took up a lot of time, and I had to give up certain things — like hanging out with friends or extra screen time — to focus. But I kept reminding myself that this story could help someone, and that gave me strength to finish it.
Were there any parts where you got stuck or even doubted yourself a little?
Definitely. One of the hardest parts was writing about the “boyfriend” character in the story. I was nervous my parents wouldn’t approve or that they’d ask me all sorts of questions — like if I had a boyfriend myself! It made me hesitate, but eventually I pushed through because the story felt real and important.
Many teenagers express themselves through social media, art, or journaling, but you chose a novel. What does writing mean to you personally, and how does it help you connect with your thoughts and feelings?
To me, writing is freedom. It’s how I express what I’m thinking and feeling without having to explain everything out loud. It gives me space to be honest, emotional, and creative — all at once. Writing lets me speak from my heart.
Bonding is such an intriguing title. Without giving away too much, what is the message or feeling you hope readers take away from your story?
The heart of Bonding is about connection — real, emotional closeness between family members. It’s about love, understanding, and creating stronger relationships at home. I hope people read it and feel encouraged to talk more with their families, spend time together, and not just focus on things like money or material success.
As a young Tanzanian girl breaking barriers, what does it feel like to be called the “youngest author ever on earth”? Do you feel pressure, pride, or maybe a mix of both?
It’s both! I do feel pressure sometimes — people expect a lot from me now. But I’m lucky because I have my parents supporting me, especially my dad and mom. They help me manage the stress and remind me to stay grounded. But more than anything, I feel proud. I’m proud that I took a big step, and I’m proud that so many people are proud of me, too! And I love that I’ve inspired others to connect more with their families and to read more books.
Finally, what advice would you give to other young people out there — maybe even your age — who have big dreams but are afraid they’re “too young” to start?
You are never too young to dream big. Believe in yourself, pray, and don’t give up. It’s okay to be scared — I was scared too. But if you have a dream, chase it with everything you’ve got. Get support from your parents or guardians, and if you can, surround yourself with people who believe in you.
The sky is the limit. You can be whoever you want to be if you’re willing to work for it, and Vivian Frank’s journey is more than just a story about writing — it’s a reminder that age should never limit ambition. With her debut novel Bonding, she’s proving that young voices can echo loudly and leave a lasting impact. And if this is just the beginning, the world should be ready — because Vivian is just getting started.
congrats VIVIAN Frank
It’s true that many young people struggle with fear, which stops them from achieving their dreams. Also, some parents are too busy with their own matters — they focus only on paying school fees and don’t take time to recognize or support their children’s other talents, which could help build a better future. Many parents are only focused on formal education.
Congratulations to Vivian, this is great!
