. Our people yearn for change, real, meaningful change. And it is our duty as social democrats to lead this transformation with courage, with compassion and with conviction, says Chairman Joshua Osih

BUEA, Cameroon – The Chairman of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), a leading opposition party in Cameroon, Honourable Joshua Osih has paid tribute to the founders and martyrs, issued a clarion call for a renewed commitment to a just, united and federal Cameroon.

Honourable Osih delivered the address on May 26, on the occasion of celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of the party’s founding, which took place on May 26, 1990, at Ntarinkon Motor Park, Bamenda, North West Region.

“Today, as we mark the 35th anniversary of our beloved Social Democratic Front, we do so with pride, with gratitude and with renewed determination,’ Honourable Osih declared on the official Facebook page of the party.

“35 years ago, the SDF was born out of the courage of the few and the hopes of millions. In the face of tyranny, we dared to dream of liberty. Against injustice, we stood for justice. And through decades of struggle, we have kept the flame of democracy alive in the hearts of Cameroonians. This anniversary is a celebration of our past and the call to action for our future.”

The anniversary, marked by events across the country, serves as both a celebration of the SDF’s enduring legacy and a rallying cry for the future. Founded in 1990 during a period of political repression, the SDF emerged as a beacon of hope for Cameroonians yearning for democratic reform. Over the decades, the party has faced significant challenges, including electoral disputes and internal struggles, yet it remains a formidable force in Cameroonian politics.

Osih, who led the party during the 2018 Presidential election, emphasized that the SDF’s mission is far from complete. “Cameroon is at a crossroads. Our people yearn for change, real, meaningful change. And it is our duty as social democrats to lead this transformation with courage, with compassion and with conviction.”

The chairman outlined the party’s vision for a “just, united, and federal Cameroon,” where the rule of law prevails, and every citizen’s rights are upheld. He stressed the importance of inclusivity, declaring, “We reaffirm our commitment to a just, united and federal Cameroon. We stand for a nation where every citizen matters, where the rule of law prevails and where no child is left behind.”

This commitment to federalism and equality has long been a cornerstone of the SDF’s platform, resonating with many Cameroonians, especially those of the two North West and South West regions who feel marginalized by the current centralized system.

Political analysts see the 35th anniversary as a critical moment for the SDF to reassert its relevance amid Cameroon’s complex political landscape. The country faces ongoing challenges, including the Anglophone crisis, economic stagnation, and calls for electoral reform. Osih’s speech underscored the SDF’s determination to address these issues head-on, positioning the party as a vehicle for transformative change.

In a touching moment, Honourable Osih paid tribute to the party’s founding fathers and martyrs, acknowledging their sacrifices as the foundation of the SDF’s resilience. “To the founding fathers, to the martyrs of our movement, to every militant who has walked this long road with us, I say thank you. Your sacrifice is our foundation.

With Joshua Osih at the helm, the SDF appears poised to continue its fight for democracy, justice, and a united Cameroon, carrying forward the hopes of millions who believe in its vision. Osih also issued a direct appeal to the youth of Cameroon, urging them to take up the mantle of leadership.

Honourable Osih said:  “To the youth of Cameroon, I say take this torch and carry it higher. The future is yours to shape.”
