In a pivotal moment for Africa’s development landscape, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah of Mauritania has been elected President of the African Development Bank Group, following a closely watched election held during the Bank’s Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
While the spotlight now turns to Dr. Tah, who brings to the role deep experience and a grounded understanding of Africa’s socio-economic tapestry, it was Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo’s powerful concession that underscored the spirit of leadership and unity needed at this juncture.
Dr. Maimbo, a seasoned figure in international development finance with over 30 years of work focused on Africa, stepped into the race not for personal ambition, but out of a “love and deep concern for our continent.” His message resonated widely, particularly among young professionals and private sector actors seeking a new developmental ethos for Africa.
Gracious in defeat, Maimbo extended warm congratulations to his opponent, stating:
“Today, the Governors have chosen the leader they believe will best deliver the vision of the Africa we want at this pivotal moment.”
He also expressed deep gratitude to governments, youth, and business partners who rallied behind his candidacy, affirming his ongoing commitment to Africa’s development and prosperity.
This was more than a standard concession. It was a statesman’s reflection — calm, composed, and forward-looking. The bilingual message, offered in both English and French, acknowledged not only the democratic process within the AfDB but also the urgency of the continent’s needs and the shared vision for transformation.
Dr. Maimbo’s campaign, while not victorious in the final vote, succeeded in stimulating dialogue around governance reform, private sector empowerment, and youth inclusion — themes that many hope will not be shelved but instead carried forward by the incoming leadership.
Supporters and peers flooded the announcement with words of encouragement and respect. From diplomats to development specialists and entrepreneurs, the response was clear: Maimbo’s message and integrity made a mark.
“You ran the race with such clarity, passion, and determination. Your campaign message will leave a huge stamp on the African continent,” wrote Grace Neo Likando, a diplomat and consultant.
“Your campaign and message were exceptional and much needed. I hope the new President will tap into your priorities,” added Davison Muchadenyika of the World Bank.
As the African Development Bank turns a new page, the election of Dr. Tah presents an opportunity to build on the hopes stirred during this campaign season. And while the chair will now be occupied by a new steward, Dr. Maimbo’s voice — shaped by years of hands-on engagement with Africa’s development finance challenges — remains as vital as ever.
Because in the end, this wasn’t just about winning an election. It was about articulating a vision for an Africa that works — boldly, inclusively, and with unwavering resolve.
