Scientists, experts and policymakers in development from around the world are gathering in Nairobi, Kenya for a week of science events, in a bid to increase the use of scientific solutions to tackle climate change, food security.

Participants hope to forge partnerships while pushing for innovation for food, nutrition and climate-secure future. A line-up of research workshops, science talks, innovation showcases will take place at the United Nations Complex in Nairobi.

Delegates attending the science week, hosted by Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research (KARL) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research ( CGIAR) are discussing major global challenges that include climate change, land and ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, food insecurity and malnutrition, rural poverty, and gender and social inequality in agrifood systems. Such obstacles are threatening the sustainability of food, land, and water systems, leaving the most vulnerable people and communities at greatest risk.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, H.E Zainab Hawa, UN Nairobi Office Director General said: “It is an immense honor to host this event bringing together the brightest minds in agricultural science and development. Science Week will present unique opportunities to share knowledge to advance and develop the role that agriculture plays in solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.”

Throughout Science Week, the role of partnerships will be strongly emphasized, recognizing the vital importance of collaboration to tackle today’s complex agricultural challenges in an increasingly challenging funding landscape.

“Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy, providing over 60 percent of employment in Kenya. Yet the sector faces a perfect storm of challenges in climate change, loss of biodiversity, and rapid population growth. The only way forward lies in science-driven solutions generated through robust partnerships among stakeholders,” said Special Guest H.E. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary of Kenya.

He added, “Kenya is fully committed to supporting agricultural research and innovation. Our Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda prioritizes the agri-food system as a key pillar of economic transformation. We believe that transforming this sector will drive poverty reduction and job creation, improved livelihoods and food security, gender equality and inclusion, and climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability.”

Key sessions on the opening day focused on science and innovation driving climate action in food, land, and water systems. A side event also spotlighted recent advancements in sustainable agriculture, AI in farming, plant breeding, food systems, and climate resilience.
