Africans for the Horn of Africa (Af4HA) is not just a platform—it is a movement of solidarity, a force ensuring African voices are at the forefront of addressing crises in the Horn of Africa.
Born out of urgency and necessity, Af4HA unites four leading Pan-African organizations—the African Leadership Centre (ALC), Atrocities Watch Africa, the International Refugee Rights Initiative (IRRI), and the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU).
Together, they have become a powerful convener, mobilizing civil society and pushing decision-makers toward a more effective, people-centered response to conflicts that have devastated the region.
In a world where crises in the Horn of Africa are often met with global indifference, Af4HA is shifting the narrative.
“This is not just about advocacy; this is about action,” the consortium stated in a joint statement released last week. “African-led solutions are not only necessary but essential. We are ensuring that those most affected by war, displacement, and humanitarian catastrophe have a voice that cannot be ignored.”
The Sudan conflict is a heartbreaking case in point. Since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the country has spiraled into chaos.
Entire neighborhoods in Khartoum have been reduced to rubble, civilians are caught in the crossfire, and millions have been forced to flee their homes. Hospitals have been shelled, food is scarce, and women and children bear the brunt of the violence. These are not abstract statistics; these are real lives, real families torn apart by a war that shows no signs of abating.
For those on the ground, the situation is a waking nightmare. A Sudanese activist working with displaced communities shared a chilling reality: “We are living in a war zone, abandoned by the world. People are scavenging for food. Families are sleeping in the open, exposed to gunfire. And yet, we are still calling for peace, for justice, for accountability.”
Af4HA’s work in Sudan exemplifies the power of grassroots mobilization. Through direct engagement with civil society groups, they amplify the voices of those often left out of diplomatic negotiations.
The consortium has been relentless in its call for accountability and the protection of civilians, urging both regional and international actors to do more. “There can be no sustainable peace without justice,” their joint statement emphasized. “The war in Sudan is not just a Sudanese crisis—it is an African crisis, and it demands an African-led response.”
But the crisis is not contained within Sudan’s borders. The ripple effects are being felt across the Horn of Africa, from South Sudan to Ethiopia, Chad to the Central African Republic. Refugee camps are swelling with desperate families seeking safety.
Resources are stretched thin, and humanitarian agencies warn of impending famine. Yet, amid the despair, Af4HA is fostering hope, building networks of solidarity that transcend borders and political divisions.
The organization has also been vocal about the role of international actors in perpetuating the crisis. The supply of weapons, the lack of decisive diplomatic intervention, and the failure to support grassroots peace efforts have all contributed to the deepening catastrophe.
“External interests have too often dictated the fate of our people,” the statement read. “We refuse to be passive observers while our continent is torn apart. African solutions must take center stage.”
This is where Af4HA’s influence is most keenly felt. By creating space for civic actors, they are ensuring that peace processes are not dictated solely by political elites but informed by the lived realities of those affected. Their advocacy has already led to increased pressure on the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to prioritize local voices in mediation efforts.
One of the most striking aspects of Af4HA’s approach is its insistence on African unity. “We are bound by a shared history, a shared struggle,” said an Af4HA spokesperson. “Our strength lies in our collective resolve. From Sudan to Somalia, Ethiopia to Eritrea, we refuse to let our people suffer in silence.”
The message is clear: African-led solutions are not just an ideal; they are the only viable path forward. Whether through legal advocacy by PALU, research and policy analysis by ALC, human rights monitoring by IRRI, or atrocity prevention efforts by Atrocities Watch Africa, the Af4HA consortium is proving that solidarity is more than just a word—it is a strategy for survival and change.
As the war in Sudan rages on, the stakes could not be higher. The conflict has already displaced more than 8 million people, making it the world’s largest displacement crisis. Yet, despite the gravity of the situation, international media coverage has been sporadic at best, and meaningful intervention remains elusive.
Af4HA is working to change that. Their advocacy campaigns have brought attention to the suffering in Sudan, pressuring regional leaders to act with urgency. Their engagement with local activists has provided critical lifelines to those on the front lines. And their commitment to justice is a reminder that impunity cannot be the final chapter in this tragedy.
“We are standing at a crossroads,” the joint statement concluded. “The choices we make today will define the future of the Horn of Africa. Will we continue to allow external forces to dictate our fate? Or will we rise together, in unity and determination, to reclaim our agency and build a peaceful, just future for our people?”
For the millions affected by the war in Sudan, the answer cannot come soon enough. Af4HA is ensuring that when the world looks back on this moment, it will see not just suffering, but resilience. Not just war, but the unwavering determination of a people refusing to be silenced. Because when African voices lead, real change becomes possible.
