Kenya and the Netherlands have signed three agreements and a Letter of Intent to strengthen trade and investment between the two countries. The deals were signed at State House, Nairobi, during the three-day visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands.
The agreements include the establishment of a Joint Trade Committee to promote business between Kenya and the Netherlands, an Agriculture Working Group to improve farming in both countries, and a Tourism Agreement aimed at attracting more Dutch tourists and investors to Kenya’s tourism sector.
Additionally, a Letter of Intent from Dutch company Invest International will fund two major water projects in Kenya: the Naivasha Special Economic Zone Water Supply and Sanitation Project and the Sabaki Bulk Water Supply Project. These projects, valued at €3 million (KSh423 million), aim to improve clean water access for Kenyan communities.
Speaking during the event, President William Ruto praised the partnership, stating, “The Netherlands’ expertise in agriculture, water management, and renewable energy fits well with Kenya’s Vision 2030.”
King Willem-Alexander also reaffirmed the strong ties between the two nations, saying, “We value our friendship with Kenya. This visit shows how closely we are working together.”
President Ruto further welcomed the entry of the Dutch investment firm Invest Africa into Kenya’s market, noting that it would provide much-needed capital for Kenya’s private sector.
The two leaders also directed their foreign ministers to hold talks on regional peace, climate change, and development partnerships.
Ruto highlighted Kenya’s commitment to global cooperation, stating, “I urged Their Majesties to uphold the Netherlands’ commitment to global cooperation.”
As part of their visit, the King and Queen will engage in several activities, including meeting young Kenyans to discuss their aspirations. They will also visit the Naivasha Inland Container Depot, where they will launch a cold-chain corridor to facilitate faster export of fresh produce to Rotterdam. Additionally, they will visit the Supreme Court and participate in the Kenya-Dutch Business Forum.
King Willem-Alexander expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, stating, “We look forward to meeting Kenyans and strengthening our friendship.”
“These engagements will help Kenya and the Netherlands grow together and explore more opportunities for cooperation,” add Ruto.
