Johannesburg, South Africa, 4 March 2025: St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies, has received official recognition from the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), with the approval valid for three years, until October 2027.
This designation allows SGU graduates from South Africa to return to the country and practice medicine upon successfully passing the required examination and submitting the necessary documentation to the HPCSA.
Marie-Claude Svaldi, Director of International Government Relations at SGU, welcomed the recognition, stating “This recognition from the HPCSA underscores our commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed for a successful medical career. With a strong academic foundation and extensive clinical exposure, our graduates are well-prepared to meet healthcare needs in South Africa and beyond.”
SGU is dedicated to preparing future physicians through rigorous academic training and hands-on clinical experience. The university offers a Four-Year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, as well as Five-, Six-, and Seven-Year MD tracks, allowing students from different educational backgrounds to pursue a career in medicine.
The School of Medicine maintains an extensive network of over 75 affiliated hospitals and clinical sites across the United States and the United Kingdom, providing students with valuable training opportunities in diverse healthcare settings. As part of its long-term commitment to supporting South African students, SGU fully intends to maintain its recognition through a timely renewal process beyond October 2027.
