The Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber (AEC) NJ Ayuk has paid glowing tribute to the late Dr Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s founding father, describing him as a visionary leader, a national hero, and an African giant whose legacy will forever be remembered.
NJ Ayuk, who was among the dignitaries present at the funeral ceremony, praised Namibia’s government for organizing a befitting farewell for a leader who dedicated his life to the liberation and development of his country.
“Namibia did an amazing job with the funeral of a visionary leader and national hero,” Ayuk said. “Honored to have paid my respects to an African Giant.”
Dr Sam Nujoma is widely celebrated as the father of Namibian independence. As the first President of Namibia (1990-2005) and founding leader of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), he played a pivotal role in liberating Namibia from colonial rule and charting a path for national reconciliation.
Ayuk acknowledged Nujoma’s fearless commitment to ensuring that Namibia broke free from apartheid oppression and colonial dominance. “He fought for the country’s independence and paved the way for reconciliation that was needed to carry the country forward,” Ayuk noted. “He emphasized the transformative power of love and wisdom in overcoming the legacy of Apartheid and colonisation in Namibia.”
Despite the pain and suffering that came with the liberation struggle, Nujoma never wavered in his belief in unity and peace. He understood that true progress could only be achieved through inclusivity, economic development, and education.
NJ Ayuk added: “He was a gallant foeman in the fight for his country’s independence, a brother when the fight was over. He was the hand that led the host with might and was the blessed torch of learning bore. A giant who changed the face of Namibia. He carried the baton longer and surer than almost anybody.”
A Leader Who Transformed Lives
Throughout his presidency, Sam Nujoma focused on nation-building and uplifting ordinary Namibians. Ayuk described him as a leader who was deeply committed to improving the lives of his people.
“As President, he was, quite simply, someone who fought to improve the lives of ordinary people in Namibia and across Africa,” he said. “He delivered roads, bridges, textbooks, and higher education to people who never would have gotten them any other way,” Ayuk emphasized.
His commitment to human development extended beyond Namibia. As a Pan-Africanist, he championed African unity and economic self-reliance, believing that Africa’s progress depended on Africans working together.
One of Dr. Nujoma’s most defining traits was his unwavering courage. Ayuk highlighted the resilience and determination that allowed him to lead his people through decades of struggle and triumph.
“He was utterly fearless. He won over and over again. And he did it all with such style,” Ayuk remarked.
A Legacy that Lives on
Even after stepping down from the presidency in 2005, Nujoma remained an influential figure, mentoring young leaders and advocating for policies that promoted Africa’s growth and self-sufficiency.
NJ Ayuk also praised Nujoma’s legacy as an educator and mentor, highlighting his role in shaping the next generation of African leaders. “With boundless generosity, patience, and moral courage, he mentored and encouraged a whole new generation of activists and leaders,” Ayuk stated.
Dr. Nujoma’s life and work continue to inspire many across Africa and beyond. His commitment to justice, development, and Pan-Africanism remains a guiding light for leaders and future generations.
“Dr. Sam Nujoma has fought a great fight. He has kept the faith, and his soul goes marching on. We honour thee, Namibia’s and Africa’s son,” Ayuk concluded.
