Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles B team has secured a coveted spot in the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), triumphing over Ghana’s Black Galaxies with a decisive 3-1 victory in the second leg of their qualifying match. The electrifying encounter unfolded on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, solidifying Nigeria’s presence in the tournament set to be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda in East Africa.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Nigeria’s homegrown football talents, who now have the opportunity to showcase their skills on a continental stage. Here’s how the match unfolded and why this achievement resonates beyond the scoreline.

The Super Eagles wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Sodiq Ismail opening the scoring in the 19th minute. The forward’s clinical finish sent the stadium into a frenzy as fans waved flags and chanted in unison. Just three minutes later, Nduka Junior doubled the lead, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by the Black Galaxies.

The Nigerian onslaught continued as Saviour Isaac found the net in the 26th minute, completing a dream start for the home team. Isaac’s precise strike left Ghanaian goalkeeper Joseph Addo rooted to the spot, reflecting the precision and confidence of Nigeria’s attack.

The Super Eagles’ performance in the first half was a masterclass in teamwork and strategy, with Coach Austin Eguavoen’s tactical adjustments paying dividends. The midfield partnership of Samson Lawal and Sunday Faleye orchestrated play with finesse, ensuring Nigeria maintained control and momentum.

The Black Galaxies, determined to salvage their pride, came out stronger in the second half. Stephen Amankona provided a glimmer of hope for Ghana when he scored a well-taken goal in the 73rd minute, reducing the deficit to 3-1.

Despite their efforts, Ghana struggled to penetrate Nigeria’s resolute defense, marshaled by captain Samson Gbadebo and the agile goalkeeper, Faith Obilor. Every attempt by the Black Galaxies to close the gap was met with swift counterattacks, keeping the pressure on Ghana until the final whistle.

The road to CHAN 2025 wasn’t without challenges for the Super Eagles. The first leg of the qualifying round, held in Accra, Ghana, on December 22, ended in a goalless draw, setting the stage for a tense second-leg showdown in Uyo.

Coach Eguavoen emphasized the importance of capitalizing on home advantage, and the team delivered spectacularly. “This victory is not just for the players but for every Nigerian who believed in us,” Eguavoen remarked post-match. “We’ve shown that with determination and hard work, we can achieve greatness.”

Scheduled to take place from February 1 to 28, 2025, the CHAN tournament offers a platform exclusively for players plying their trade in domestic leagues. Nigeria’s qualification underscores the strength of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in nurturing talent capable of competing at the highest levels.

With Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda co-hosting the tournament, CHAN 2025 promises to be a celebration of African football. Nigeria will face tough competition, but the team’s emphatic qualification has raised hopes for a strong showing.

This triumph goes beyond the realm of sports, symbolizing unity and resilience in a country often divided by political and social challenges. The sight of thousands of fans filling the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, united in their support for the Super Eagles, served as a reminder of football’s power to inspire and bring people together.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), led by President Ibrahim Gusau, has pledged continued support for the team as they prepare for CHAN 2025. “This victory is a testament to the potential of our home-based players,” Gusau stated. “We are committed to providing the resources and support needed to excel in East Africa.”

As the Super Eagles B team begins preparations for CHAN 2025, expectations are high. The tournament represents a chance to redeem Nigeria’s reputation in CHAN, where past performances have been inconsistent.

Coach Eguavoen has already hinted at plans to strengthen the squad, emphasizing the importance of discipline, fitness, and tactical acumen. “We’re not just going to participate; we’re going to compete and aim for the title,” he affirmed.

The players, too, are eager to seize the opportunity. Sodiq Ismail, the match’s opening goal scorer, expressed his excitement: “This is a dream come true for me and my teammates. We’re ready to make Nigeria proud on the big stage.”

Social media platforms erupted with celebrations as fans shared highlights, congratulatory messages, and memes commemorating the victory. The hashtag #SuperEagles trended nationwide, reflecting the pride and joy of millions.
“It’s a great day for Nigerian football,” tweeted a fan. “We’re back where we belong—at the top of African football!”

Others praised the team’s resilience and teamwork, calling for more investment in grassroots football to sustain the success.

The Super Eagles’ qualification also has economic implications, with increased interest in domestic leagues expected to boost ticket sales, merchandise, and sponsorships. Additionally, the team’s success shines a spotlight on Nigeria’s vibrant football culture, inspiring young players across the country to pursue their dreams.

The Super Eagles’ victory over Ghana’s Black Galaxies is more than just a football result; it’s a statement of intent, a celebration of talent, and a beacon of hope for the future. As the team prepares for CHAN 2025, Nigerians everywhere will be cheering them on, confident that their stars can shine on the grandest stage of all.

For now, the chants of “Up Super Eagles!” echo across the nation, a testament to the unifying power of football in bringing joy and pride to millions.
