Mogadishu – Somalia has officially announced its candidacy for the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) for the 2025–2028 term, signaling a major step in its commitment to advancing peace and security across the continent.

The Federal Republic of Somalia described this move as an opportunity to build on its remarkable progress as a nation and contribute to Africa’s collective efforts toward peace and stability.

In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on January 9, 2025, Somalia called this moment a reflection of its transformative journey and dedication to Pan-African ideals. “This represents a pivotal moment for Somalia to contribute significantly to Africa’s peace and security agenda,” the statement said.

Somalia has played a vital role in hosting the African Union Mission for more than 17 years, demonstrating resilience as it transitioned into a stable and functional state.

Achievements such as securing debt relief, its recent election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2025–2026 term, and its accession to the East African Community showcase the country’s readiness to lead.

The government also pointed out that Somalia has not yet had the opportunity to serve on the AU Peace and Security Council since its establishment in 2004, making this candidacy a milestone for inclusivity and fair representation.

Officials stressed that the candidacy is about more than filling a seat; it represents Somalia’s dedication to working alongside other nations to deepen Africa’s shared vision for unity and progress.
In its statement, Somalia highlighted the importance of aligning African priorities on the global stage.

With its upcoming membership in the United Nations Security Council, Somalia is uniquely positioned to help guide international discussions that address Africa’s most pressing challenges.

The country’s long history of standing in solidarity with African liberation movements, fighting apartheid, and championing independence reflects its enduring commitment to Pan-Africanism.

The government also outlined its vision for the future. Somalia aims to enhance peacekeeping operations by sharing lessons learned from its own experiences, tackle the root causes of conflicts to create sustainable peace and drive reforms to improve how crises are managed across the continent. These efforts are intended to build a stronger, more resilient Africa.

The announcement also reinforced Somalia’s focus on long-term development. As part of its broader agenda, the country is advancing strategies for adding value to strategic minerals and contributing to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions through clean energy initiatives.

Somalia’s candidacy is a call for unity and shared progress across Africa. “This is more than just a seat at the table,” the government said. “It’s about ensuring that our collective vision for a peaceful, united Africa is realized.”

With its transformative history and clear goals, Somalia is positioning itself as a key player in advancing the African Union’s peace and security agenda.

The nation’s commitment to inclusivity, reform, and sustainable peace underscores its readiness to lead and contribute to a prosperous future for the continent.
