CAF Postpones CHAN 2024 to August 2025

January 16, 2025

By Samuel Ouma

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has postponed the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, which was originally scheduled for February 2025, to August 2025 in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

This decision was made to provide additional time for the necessary infrastructure and facilities to meet the standards required for hosting this prestigious tournament.

CAF’s Technical and Infrastructure experts, who have been working in the host countries, recommended this postponement.
While there has been significant progress in constructing and upgrading stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other essential facilities, the confederation stated that more time is needed to ensure everything meets its standards.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed gratitude to the Presidents of the host nations—President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda—for their leadership and dedication to the tournament.

“I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda,” Dr. Motsepe remarked. “I am confident that by August 2025, the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure will meet the necessary CAF standards for a successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN).”

The announcement came hours before CAF held the tournament draw in Nairobi. The event will take place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 8:00 PM Nairobi time.
CAF will announce the exact start date for the rescheduled championship in due course.
