DPP Set for Victory as Malawi’s Political Landscape Shifts Ahead of 2025 Elections

As Malawi moves closer to the 2025 general elections, the latest findings from the Afrobarometer survey provide compelling insights into the public's shifting political views. The survey highlights a growing wave of dissatisfaction with the current government, particularly its handling of corruption, economic stability, and public services.

With nearly three-quarters of the population believing the country is heading in the wrong direction, this sentiment signals that change is in the air. While a sense of discontent is prevalent, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is emerging as the potential beneficiary of this shift, with survey results showing a stronger preference for DPP over rival parties.

While public sentiment remains largely critical of the current government, a clear opening emerges for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to step into a leadership role, capitalizing on citizens' dissatisfaction and shifting their hopes toward a party they believe can deliver stronger leadership.

According to the survey, nearly 76% of Malawians think the country is headed in the wrong direction. Though this represents a slight improvement from 89% in 2022, it signals widespread frustration with the status quo. These discontented citizens are seeking change, and DPP, with its established leadership, is well-positioned to tap into this growing desire for a shift in governance.

The frustration is compounded by worsening economic conditions, inflation, and widespread concerns over the government's failure to tackle corruption effectively.

More than 68% of Malawians say corruption has increased over the past year, with many expressing dissatisfaction with the current administration's inability to address this endemic issue.

Victory for the DPP will see the return to power of Prof Peter Mutharika who has vowed to end Malawi's race to the bottom under incumbent President Chakwera

DPP’s stance on restoring accountability and transparency could prove to be one of the party's most compelling selling points as they head into the election season.

In stark contrast to the current government, DPP is seen by many as the more credible alternative, promising a return to economic stability, job creation, and improved governance. A closer look at the survey’s voting intention figures shows that 43% of respondents would vote for DPP if elections were held today.

This is a substantial lead over the 29% who would vote for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), the current ruling party. While smaller parties like UTM and UDF are represented in the figures, they are far behind, with no party managing to capture a significant enough portion of the electorate to challenge DPP’s lead.

This early polling advantage for DPP is an encouraging sign, particularly as the survey also notes that 14% of respondents are undecided. This presents an opportunity for DPP to solidify its position by focusing on this group of potential voters. These undecided individuals, who are yet to commit to any party, could be swayed by DPP's promises of better governance and its commitment to eradicating corruption. With a clear message of change and progress, DPP has the potential to attract a significant portion of this undecided electorate.

The dissatisfaction with the ruling government isn't just about the economy and corruption. Citizens also express frustration over the government’s handling of public services.

While the current government has made progress in areas like water provision, electricity reliability, and education, it has failed to meet the growing demands of the people in these sectors.
DPP, on the other hand, has the opportunity to position itself as a more competent leader in these areas, with a focus on improving public services and infrastructure.

As the 2025 elections approach, DPP’s leadership is likely to play a central role in shaping the political debate.

Despite the challenges posed by the current government’s tenure, there is a sense of hope that a new administration could restore stability and accountability to Malawi’s governance.

DPP’s ability to position itself as the party of change is bolstered by the survey’s findings, which highlight the increasing concerns over corruption, economic instability, and the government's underperformance.

Malawians have voiced their discontent with the current administration, and DPP stands ready to capitalize on this dissatisfaction. With its impressive voter base, clear focus on tackling corruption, and promise to strengthen the economy, DPP is poised to lead Malawi into a new era. The overwhelming support for DPP in the survey reflects a growing belief that the party can provide the strong leadership the country desperately needs.

As the survey also reveals, the upcoming 2025 elections are shaping up to be a pivotal moment for Malawi. With the nation’s political future at stake, the opportunity for DPP to emerge as the dominant force in Malawian politics is clear.

By focusing on the issues that matter most to the electorate—economic stability, the fight against corruption, and improved public services—DPP can continue to build momentum toward victory. With 43% of voters already behind them, DPP is well-positioned to secure a resounding win in the 2025 elections, paving the way for a brighter future for the people of Malawi.
