Kenyan President William Ruto drummed support for Raila Odinga's candidacy for Chairperson of the African Union Commission during the 23rd COMESA Summit in Bujumbura, Burundi.
In his remarks, President Ruto stated that Odinga’s experience and commitment make him the “best man for the job” as Africa seeks to enhance unity, economic integration, and social stability.
Ruto's plea comes as Africa's most significant economic bloc, COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa). It discusses several issues affecting its 21 member nations, such as promoting commerce, tourism, and climate-resilient farming methods.
As African countries strive for greater integration and coordinated solutions to urgent crises, Kenya's support of Odinga, the former prime minister, shows the country's determination to make its presence known within the AU.
Ruto noted that Odinga is well-positioned to advance the AU's agenda because of his background in both regional and global issues.
“I want to take this opportunity to ask for your support on the position of the AU Commission chairperson. Mr Odinga is the best man for the job,” said Ruto.
Some countries have pledged to support Odinga during the February 2025 AU elections; others are expected to announce their support in the coming week.
Those that have thrown their weight behind the ODM party leader include Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and South Africa.
