On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence welcomed Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima, the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, and her delegation to her office in the Capitol Building, Monrovia. The meeting served as an acquaintance and familiarization session, focused on the ongoing leadership crisis within Liberia's House of Representatives.

Accompanying Speaker Ibrahima were members of parliament from various ECOWAS nations, including Togo, The Gambia, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria. The gathering also saw the presence of prominent senators in leadership roles, such as Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, Senator Alex Tyler, Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, Senator Nathaniel McGill, and Senator Prince Moye, among others.

During her address, Speaker Ibrahima emphasized ECOWAS's commitment to ensuring stable governance in Liberia, likening the organization to a family or a human body, stating that when one part is affected, the entire body suffers. "We are here to seek clarity and facilitate mediation. ECOWAS is like a family; when one part is sick, the entire body is sick. We are here with no favoritism. We are not here to teach but to help solve the issues," she expressed.

In her response, Pro Tempore Lawrence assured the ECOWAS delegation of the Senate's willingness to cooperate and shared insights into the Senate's efforts to address the crisis. "We are all concerned about the impasse in the House of Representatives, but we are separate houses governed by separate rules. We are concerned but are playing a more neutral role to ensure that the situation is resolved," she stated.

The meeting highlighted the collaborative spirit between Liberia's Senate and the ECOWAS Parliament, as they work together to navigate the challenges facing the country’s governance.
