BUEA, Cameroon – In a call for enhanced governance and accountability, Honorable Njume Peter, Member of Parliament for Ndian in the South West Region, has urged President Paul Biya to strengthen institutional checks and ensure greater transparency within the government. The MP, a member of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), delivered his remarks during the popular program Press Hour, broadcasted on Cameroon's national television. The episode, which highlighted President Biya's 42 years of leadership, also allowed MP Njume to outline areas where he believes progress is still needed.

Hon Njume Peter acknowledged the significant strides Cameroon has made under President Biya's lengthy tenure but voiced concern about what he perceives as ineffective mechanisms for checks and balances. "A lot has been done by President Paul Biya in 42 years but if I have the opportunity to advise President Biya, I will tell him we have to improve our governance and accountability. The mechanisms for checks are ineffective. The president should allow parliament to play its role," he urged

The MP’s call for reform reflects broader public concerns over institutional oversight and responsiveness within Cameroon's governance structure. During his statement, Njume also advocated for a constitutional review, hinting that updates to the nation’s constitution could play a crucial role in ensuring checks and accountability.

Hon Njume's remarks come as President Biya marks over four decades as head of state, a milestone that has sparked national debate on Cameroon's political evolution, governance standards, and future trajectory.
