Zambia: Water Crisis Hits Mpika Due to Loadshedding

August 19, 2024

By Alice Chisanga

A severe water crisis has struck Mpika, in the Northern part of Zambia with some areas going without water for up to two months due to inadequate supply.

The Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company's struggles have been exacerbated by loadshedding, making it impossible to meet demand.

The situation has been worsened by ZESCO's disconnection of power supply to the water company's headquarters over unpaid bills.

Local Area Member of Parliament Francis Robert Kapyanga has condemned ZESCO's actions, calling for immediate reconnection and a payment plan that considers the current loadshedding situation.

Kapyanga has also urged the government to address the root cause of the crisis by increasing power imports and considering innovative solutions like Turkey's Electric Ships.

The water shortage poses a significant risk of disease outbreaks, and swift action is necessary to protect public health.

The Member of Parliament has vowed to continue monitoring the situation and working towards a solution, calling on all stakeholders to join the effort.
