Safaricom's M-PESA has once again been recognized for its excellence in mobile financial services, having been re-certified by the GSM Association (GSMA).

Originally accredited in 2018 as one of the pioneering mobile money operators to receive this certification, M-PESA has consistently maintained its status, meeting and exceeding the stringent standards set by the GSMA Mobile Money Certification.

This global standard ensures certified providers uphold principles that protect customer funds, safeguard personal data, maintain system security, and deliver transparent services with robust customer support.

The GSMA Mobile Money Certification underscores the reliability of M-PESA, assuring users of a secure and worry-free service while emphasizing the importance of combating financial crimes such as money laundering and fraud.

This re-certification reinforces consumer trust in M-PESA and enhances its reputation as a leading mobile financial service provider, setting a benchmark for the industry.

Commenting on this significant achievement, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa expressed his pride in M-PESA’s ongoing contribution to financial inclusion in Kenya and across the region.

“This certification is evidence that we have taken a step further to ensure that customers’ funds are in safe hands, that their rights are being observed through our business practices, and that a high level of customer service can be expected,” said Ndegwa.

“Certification is a sign that our business practices are among the best in the industry, that we are providing a secure, transparent, and reliable mobile money service. It also positions us as a trustworthy and responsible mobile financial service provider, making us an attractive candidate for collaboration with innovators and the business community.”

M-PESA has been instrumental in driving financial inclusion, particularly in Kenya, where millions of previously unbanked people now have access to financial services.

The platform has also gained significant global recognition over the past decade, with 31.5 million active users as of March 2024.
