Over thirty cases of measles mostly among children in their teens have been recorded in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe, with health authorities stating quick interventions on the situation.
Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus.
It spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. It can cause severe disease, complications, and even death. Measles can affect anyone but is most common in children.
In a statement, Malawi ministry of health says the outbreak has impacted multiple villages leading to a total of 32 suspected cases.
Dr. Samson Mndolo, Secretary for Health, has through the statement indicated that the majority of those affected are children under the age of 15, many of whom have previously received the measles vaccination.
The ministry has urged the public to adhere to measles prevention measures while they make dedicated efforts to manage and contain the outbreak.
