President Biden Announces Inaugural Members of the President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a significant step towards fostering stronger cultural, social, political, and economic ties between African communities and the African diaspora, President Joe Biden has unveiled the inaugural members of the President's Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement (PAC-ADE) within the U.S. Department of State. These distinguished leaders bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise in strengthening United States-Africa relations and shaping U.S. foreign policy toward Africa. The PAC-ADE members reflect the rich diversity of the African diaspora, encompassing African American and African immigrant communities.

The 12 appointed members for the 2023-2025 term of the PAC-ADE are a remarkable blend of accomplished individuals, each of whom has made significant contributions to their respective fields. Their collective wisdom and insights will play a pivotal role in guiding the United States' engagement with African communities across the globe.

Here is an introduction to the esteemed members of the PAC-ADE:

  1. Silvester Scott Beaman of Delaware, Chair
  • Silvester Beaman is the 139th elected and consecrated Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, currently serving in South Africa, Namibia, and Angola.
  1. Mimi E. Alemayehou of Washington, D.C., Member
  • Mimi Alemayehou is the Founder and Managing Partner of Semai Ventures LLC, focusing on sustainable development in emerging economies.
  1. Rosalind Brewer of Georgia, Member
  • Rosalind Brewer served as the Chief Executive Officer of Walgreens Boots Alliance and held leadership roles at Starbucks and Sam’s Club.
  1. Viola Davis of Rhode Island, Member
  • Viola Davis is an EGOT-winning artist, activist, producer, and philanthropist, committed to social justice causes.
  1. Helene D. Gayle of Georgia, Member
  • Dr. Helene Gayle serves as the 11th president of Spelman College and has a rich background in public health and humanitarian work.
  1. Patrick Hubert Gaspard of New York, Member
  • Patrick Gaspard, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, has extensive experience in government, philanthropy, and global diplomacy.
  1. C.D. Glin of Connecticut, Member
  • C.D. Glin, President of the PepsiCo Foundation, leads social impact and community engagement efforts, focusing on critical issues like food insecurity and access to safe water.
  1. Osagie Imasogie of Pennsylvania, Member
  • Osagie Imasogie is Chairman of Quoin Capital, a co-founder of PIPV Capital, and holds positions on several boards, including FS-KKR Capital Corp and the University of Pennsylvania.
  1. Almaz Negash of California, Member
  • Almaz Negash is the founder of the African Diaspora Network (ADN), an organization dedicated to fostering collaboration between Africans in the Diaspora and social entrepreneurs.
  1. Chinenye Joy Ogwumike of Texas, Member - Chinenye "Chiney" Ogwumike is a 2-Time WNBA All-Star and a full-time ESPN host and NBA analyst, deeply involved in philanthropic efforts.
  2. Ham K. Serunjogi of California, Member - Ham Serunjogi is the Co-founder & CEO of Chipper Cash, a leading African fintech company with a valuation of over $2 billion.
  3. Kevin Young of Washington, D.C., Member - Kevin Young is the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, a distinguished poet, and editor.

The PAC-ADE will receive support from the State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, with Executive Director Deniece Laurent-Mantey overseeing operations. Members of the council will convene periodically, offering their insights to help strengthen the bonds between African communities and the African diaspora.

President Biden's announcement of the first members of the President's Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement highlights America's dedication to acknowledging the significant roles played by African diaspora communities. This initiative aims to enhance diversity, cultural interchange, and informed policymaking, contributing to a more inclusive United States.
