Mozambique To Limit Raw Mineral Exports

July 24, 2023

By Jorge Joaquim

Mozambique plans to limit the export of raw, unprocessed mining products to encourage their processing within the country, and is already reviewing mining sector legislation to be finalised by the end of this year, industry minister Silvino Moreno said last week.

Moreno pointed to the Chibuto heavy sand mining project in Gaza province and the Moma project in Nampula as examples, which he said should already be turning out products for the paint industry.

A mapping of the mineral products to be covered was underway, he added.

On the other hand, the foundation stone was laid on Friday for the construction of a magnetite plant in Catipo village, Moatize district, Tete province, planned to produce 75,000 tonnes of the mineral per year.

If realised, it will be the first plant in the country processing magnetite, an ore used in the coal, iron and steel industries.
