Tanzania’s Minister for Tourism and Natural Resources, Mohamed Mchengerwa has on Friday, June 03, tabled a Tsh654.6 billion budget to be used by his ministry in 2023/24 financial year.
A total of Tsh654.6 billion that has been estimated to be used by the ministry in 2023/24 compared with Tsh 624.1 billion spent in the previous year of 2022/23 is an increase of Tsh 30. 5 billion and would give the much-needed boost to domestic tourism to mould the sector and up its contribution to the economy of the East African nation.
Mchengerwa told the lawmakers at the Parliament in Dodoma that the Tsh654.6 billion will be used to implement different projects in his ministry such as Resilient Natural Resources Management for Tourism and Growth Project- REGROW). “This budget will also continue erasing poaching and illegal wildlife trade in the country.”
The estimation Budget has shown a lot of positives in pushing the sector into different miles among other things the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism will also implement other projects including Private Plantation and Value Chain in Tanzania, capacity building in Forestry and Beekeeping, support to beekeeping value chain programme (BEVAC) and Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration in Tanzania’s Landscapes (FOLUR).
The Minister added: “Out of the requested amount, 486bn/- is for recurrent while 168bn/- is for development projects.”
Mchengerwa went on to say that the Ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources is anticipating generating a total of 771.8bn/- from different projects through IT systems.
“In the 2023/24 financial year, we will continue to strengthen the preservation and sustainable use of natural resources, antiquities and museums as well as promoting them digitally,” he said.
The minister noted: “We also continue to promote tourism in and outside the country through the Royal Tour programme, to develop strategic tourism products including beach tourism, meetings, events, ships, sports and culture.”
