Malawi :Chakwera To Attend King Charles III Coronation

By Joseph Dumbula President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is among global leaders heading to London, United Kingdom to attend the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty the Queen Consort. A statement from Ministry of Foreign affairs says Chakwera will be among dignitaries as the coronation will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, 6th May, 2023. The statement says Chakwera’s attendance of the coronation is in solidarity and commitment that Malawi has, to its special relationship with the United Kingdom and Commonwealth member states. “Members of the public may be aware that the United Kingdom is Malawi’s long-term traditional development partner with whom the country shares common values and norms. The United Kingdom has maintained very close relations with Malawi over the decades and has committed to strengthening the ties into the future. Further, His majesty the King is the head of Commonwealth of nations to which Malawi is a member.” The statement adds that the Malawi leader will also take advantage of the visit to hold bilateral talks not only with the UK Government but also with other world leaders who are expected to attend the event. According to the statement, the plane carrying the president is expected to depart Kamuzu International Airport at 16: 45 hours and is expected to return back home on Tuesday, 9th May, 2023 at 13: 35 hours. Malawi, then Nyasaland was a British Protectorate from 1891 to 1964, when it became independent as Malawi. The country was known as the British Central Africa Protectorate until 1907. It was administered by the Foreign Office until 1904. Between 1953 and 1963 it was part of the Central African Federation, together with Southern and Northern Rhodesia, and some departmental responsibilities, such as Customs and Excise, Defence, Power, non-African Education, Health and Civil Aviation, were taken over by the Federal Government.
