Kenyan President William Ruto revealed that Kenya will follow in the footsteps of Singapore to realize affordable housing for its citizens.

While praising the Singapore Housing model, President Ruto said the Asian nation has one of the most successful stories on public housing matters.

Ruto spoke during a joint press briefing with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at State House in Nairobi on Wednesday.

President Ruto asked Kenyans to sacrifice by saving so that 6.5 million people who lack affordable and decent housing can have a place to call home.

“Their story and journey did not start overnight began 60 years ago, around the same time we established our housing policy in Kenya,” said President Ruto.

"They took some hard decisions and made some sacrifices where they undertook mandatory savings and the results are there for everyone to see. We are successful in taking these bold steps. As a result, our country is infamous for having some of the largest informal settlements, that number in excess of 1140 slums," added Ruto.

“I don't want us to postpone this agenda anymore. And as I am asking Kenyans to make the choice by saving into the housing fund so that 60 years from now, we can also have a similar success story.”

At the same time, President Ruto invited Singaporeans' private sector to consider investment opportunities in Kenya’s transport and logistics.

Ruto also stated that they have looked into the possibility of Singapore becoming a gateway for Kenyan agricultural exports to the Asian region.
