Africans Rising, the Pan African movement for unity, justice, peace and unity, has declared May 22 to 28 African Liberation Week.

The African Liberation Week is drawn from African Liberation Day, observed annually on May 25, to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), currently known as the African Union, created on May 25, 1963.

During African Liberation Week, the movement will mobilise thousands of people across Africa and the diaspora to commemorate Pan-African cooperation and solidarity.

Under the theme Borderless Africa, Africans Rising aims to bring Africans together to advocate for the ratification and enforcement of the AU protocol on the free movement of people and goods in Africa.

At the same time, the movement will protest against rampant inequalities and food, energy and climate crises.

“The geopolitical whirlwinds we see today demand that we build strength and prosper together, which can only happen through unity and Pan-African solidarity. We must ask ourselves whether or not we are prepared to emerge from these as drawers of water and hewers of wood as we have been for the past centuries”, said Hardi Yakubu, Africans Rising Movement Coordinator.

Last year, under the theme "Africa for Africans," the African Liberation Week mobilisation included over 500 actions in 46 African and diaspora nations.

This year, the movement said there will be over 400 co-organised and self-organised activities/events in African towns, communities and the diaspora.

It has urged Africans and those descended from Africa to locate and organise events nearby and invite people and organisations to join them.

Those who cannot organise or join the organised events have been asked to financially support movements or organisations willing to hold activities during the African Liberation Week.
