Tanzania: Young Africans Earn Away Victory Over Rivers United In Nigeria

April 23, 2023

By Prosper Makene Tanzania’s football champions Dar es Salaam Young Africans Sports Club popularly known by the fans as Yanga SC laid down a marker on their ambition for the first continental title after earning a brilliant 0-2 away victory over Nigeria’s River United on Sunday evening in the first-leg of their CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final clash. Young Africans’ Congolese striker Fiston Mayele put up a brilliant performance with two goals from assisted by Bakari Nondo Mwanyeto at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. The win in Nigeria for the East African football giant team eases pressure on their shoulders ahead of the return fixture in Benjamin Mkapa, Tanzania’s national stadium next weekend. The Tanzanian giants stamped their authority right after the second half in the 73 and 83rd minutes after the Congolese finest striker makes a good finish. The Young Africans' two goals seemingly killed off River United’s hopes of a comeback as the Tanzanian team dominated much of the play with 55 ball possessions. The Yanga-Rivers game was officiated by South African referee Abongile Tom assisted by Ivanildo Meirelles of Angola and Miro Montenegro of Sao Tome and Principe and the fourth official was Djindo Houngnandande from Benin. The win for Young Africans means a lot to the Dar es Salaam giants after the Nigerian club side beats them on a double win in 2021 and booked their place in the first round of the CAF Champions League.
