The Mozambique-Zimbabwe Pipeline Company (CPMZ) and state-owned port and rail company CFM should work together to increase capacity to supply hinterland countries with fuel through the Port of Beira, Transport minister Mateus Magala said on a visit to the port on Tuesday.
Magala’s visit came on the heels of a visit to Beira by President Filipe Nyusi and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, where Hichilema had called for more fuel imports to his country to come through Beira.
The CPMZ pipeline, from Beira to Feruka near Harare in Zimbabwe, currently has a capacity for 2.2m m3 per year, but that should reach 3m in June this year, and 5m in the coming years.
Last year, it transported 1.7m m3 of fuel.
