Rwanda: Serial Killer Arrested After Four Dead

By Maniraguha Ferdinand Rwanda Police arrested Hafashimana Usto known as  Yussuf, after getting evidences linking him the murder of  four people with a machete. Hafashimana, 34, was arrested recently following previous reports on four murder cases and two  serious injuries in different areas of Kigali, between December 2022 and January 2023. Police in the capital Kigali said that two of deceased were killed in a cruel manner by cutting their heads. Suspect revealed that the modus operandi is to kill using machete those who are asleep mainly guards. After being paraded before media this Sunday on 5th February 2023, Hafashimana pleaded guilty, before blaming bad spirit for pushing him into committing the heinous crime. “I discovered that what I did was a crime after being arrested. I regret it now, asking the nation to forgive me. I had planned to kill at least forty people”, he said. Hagenama Vedaste who survived the Hafashimana’s machete, recalls what happened during the night of 30 December 2022. “I was with my colleague guarding a house under construction. We were sleeping. Around 1 PM, we got hurriedly with our faces, heads cut. We did not who was the culprit then”, he said. “He cut me in the head up to the noses. My eye is no longer functional. I don’t know why he did this to me”, he added. Police said that Hafashimana was a member of the gang which used to rob people in the city. He had been detained for two years between 2015 and 2017, and later released. He was mainly involved in housebreaking robberies. His case has been transferred to investigation institutions to be prosecuted in the court of law.
