Atiku to INEC: Remove Lagos REC Before Elections

February 12, 2023

By Joshua Samuel Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) presidential candidate, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to oust Olusegun Agbaje, the REC for Lagos State, 16 days before the start of the 2023 general election. According to Atiku, Agbaje had been charged with trying to sway the outcome of the election. He pointed out that the REC's insistence on having Musiliu Akinsanya, commonly known as MC Oluomo, lead the Lagos State Park and Garage Management Committee transport vital electoral materials was a scheme to taint the results. Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku disputed Agbaje's explanation for why INEC would choose to transport critical materials using MC Oluomo's company. Because others have been prohibited from operating in Lagos State, the INEC REC had previously stated that the commission will utilise MC Oluomo's transportation company. "What Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu did in Lagos State was to unilaterally announce a ban on the NURTW's operations because the group suspended MC Oluomo, the APC's henchman," reads a statement from Shaibu. "INEC must not support illegality by collaborating with a partisan group that is made up of APC members that support Bola Tinubu." Giving MC Oluomo's boys critical election documents to distribute in Lagos State, according to the statement, would compromise a free and fair election in 2023. "INEC must penalise Mr. Agbaje for persisting on employing MC Oluomo's committee in the face of public outcry," he continued.
