By Samuel Ouma [caption id="attachment_100396" align="alignnone" width="1080"] AU Commision Chair Faki with PM Abiy[/caption] The Chair of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has welcomed the Tigray regional government's announcement that it is committed to a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The Chair highlighted the new development as a unique opportunity to restore peace in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. “In this regard, the Chairperson particularly commends the regional government of Tigray for its readiness to engage in negotiations, in line with a similar call made by the Federal Government of Ethiopia," reads part of a statement released by the AU. Faki further urges both Parties to urgently work towards an immediate ceasefire and engage in direct talks in an AU-led process that is inclusive of mutually agreed international partners. He also reaffirmed the AU's long-standing and ongoing commitment to a robust and credible peace process, based on the commendable political courage of both parties, which should immediately contribute to realizing the legitimate aspirations and supreme interests of all Ethiopians for peace, stability, and sustainable development. The Chair also called on the international community to give more support to the ongoing AU-led peace process.
