Two top Kenya Premier League clubs Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, clashed in an exhibition match as part of Madaraka Day Celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium.
Gor Mahia stole the show by edging out their arch-rivals 6-5 on penalties to win the match graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
After a 1-1 draw in regular time, the match proceeded to penalties without extra time, where Leopards’ winger Peter Thiong’o failed to put the ball in the net. Esilaba Tedianm, Munene Washington, Omune Victor, Lopaga Josephat and Makwata John converted all their penalties for AFC Leopards.
Leopards took the lead in the 36th minute through Collins Shivachi, with Gor equalizing in the 68th minute following the former’s goalkeeper Levis Opiyo’s error.
