The PS has said despite the ban for single use plastic in Kenya in 2017, the porous borders are illegally making available plastics, hence the need for robust regulations that will help address the complex and multifaceted plastic menace. The PS spoke on March 1, 2022, at the sidelines of the ongoing UNEA5 meeting at UNEP Headquarters Gigiri, Nairobi, during and interview with location TV station NTV. “Taking a regional approach in harmonizing policies across regions will help deal with plastic pollution, we need legally binding regulations to deal with the menace,” said the PS. The PS said the issue of pollution need adoption of circular economy, where the whole life cycle of plastics is addressed and this he said will be addressed by the expected Waste Management Policy which is awaiting senate approval before it becomes law. PS Kiptoo said UNEA 5.2 sessions is also expected to pass 17 resolutions focusing on different aspects of the environment.
