Operations to fight terrorists in Mozambique draining $303m per year – President Nyusi

By Jorge Joaquim Military and security operations to eliminate the terrorist threat in Cabo Delgado, northem Mozambique, cost $303m, said the Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi. The head of state was speaking at the Aqaba Process, an initiative launched in 2015 by King Abdullah of Jordan to discuss international cooperation on military and security matters. Nyusi disclosed the cost of operations as he sought to generate further financial support for fighting the terrorism, which its acts are growing. The number of internally displaced people due to the insurgency in Cabo Delgado rose by 7% in three months to 784,000 people, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) announced in its latest report on the conflict. In a survey carried out between January and February, IOM revealed that the increase is due to attacks by armed rebels in Nangade, Meluco, Macomia and the Quirimbas archipelago. There are 49,100 more internally displaced people now than in November’s survey. The figure also includes people displaced by attacks in Niassa province in December last year.
