By Boris Esono Nwenfor [caption id="attachment_94955" align="alignnone" width="720"] Leandre Tawamba has scored 15 goals for Al Taawoun this campaign[/caption] 32-year-old Leandre Gaël Tawamba Kana who plays as a striker for Al Taawoun in the Saudi Professional League has been retained by Head Coach Rigobert Song for the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup play-off against Algeria. The striker is currently tied for second on the top scorer’s chart at the time of this report with 15 goals. He has been sensational with his goals helping Al Taawoun to 13 on the log with 25 points. Since beginning his national team career with the Indomitable Lions, Leandre Tawamban has featured just four times for his national team. Despite his exploits in the League, he was frequently left out by former Coach Antonio Conceicao in the selection or pre-selection process. Rigobert Song has maintained most of the players that saw Cameroon win third place at the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. Captain Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko Ekambi, who finished top scorer and runner-up all got the nod, same as goalkeeper Andre Onana, who will be moving to Italian giant Inter Milan this summer. Song has handed a place for Coton Sport’s player Wassou Patient, the lone local-based player in the squad. He was not even amongst the pre-selected players but his exploits for Coton in the ongoing CAF Confederation Cup has certainly given him the nod. [caption id="attachment_94956" align="alignnone" width="1024"] After finishing third at the AFCON, the Indomitable Lions will hope to qualify for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup[/caption] Hannover midfielder Gael Ondoa and Asteras Tripolis forward Kevin Soni have also kept their places in the squad having been handed their first call-ups. Galatasaray defender Sacha Boey, unfortunately, missed out on the final list of players. It is the same for goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa whose pre-selection was warmly received. However, the final list saw him missing out as did Clinton Njie and Christian Bassogog. The Indomitable Lions will battle with Algeria this March 25 for the first of the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup play-offs at the Japoma Stadium in Douala. The return leg comes up four days later in Blida, Algeria.
