December 26, 2021

By Badylon Kawanda Bakiman Unexpectedly, the Christmas party was turned upside down by a tragedy that occurred on December 25, 2021 in the Beni city, province of North Kivu in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). “It was around 7:45 pm to 8:00 pm that some kind of bomb went off. An attack near a bar called "Imbox". A man blew himself up. He and five others were deceased and a dozen injured. They were taken to the Beni General Hospital, "Patrick Muyaya, central government communication and media minister, told national television shortly after the tragedy. While condemning this nth attack, the Minister of Communication and Media called on the population to be vigilant and to support the armed forces of the Republic which are in the sector "to put an end to this terrorist movement". “Following this event, security measures were reinforced. Immediately the mayor of Beni required the population to stay at home, to avoid riding a motorbike. Patrols have been stepped up. Security forces have been deployed. With this act, the entire Congo was affected, "he added. According to him, there were already alerts on June 27, still in the same town of Beni. It was an attack on a church which also claimed victims. "This is why the President of the Republic is determined to bring peace to this part of the country. (...) Investigations are underway to see if it is possible to identify the Kamikaze, to go up the chain", he said, expressin ‘’government solidarity’’ with the affected families. For years the east of the country has been shaken by indescribable insecurity caused by the presence of more than 80 armed groups killing millions of people. Demonstrations to demand the return of peace were made by civil society and by citizen movements but without success.
