Rwanda to offer the third dose of COVID-19 vaccine

The Ministry of Health in Rwanda has announced that it will soon start offering the third dose of COVID-19 vaccine to people above 50 in general and those between above 30 with chronic diseases

The announcement was made by Dr. Tarcisse Mpunga, the Minister for State for Public Health on Monday, 29, November 2021 in a statement.

“ The Ministry of Health informs all the people living in Rwandan that it will start offering a COVID 19 vaccine dose that complements other vaccines one have received effective from November 30 2021. The exercise shall start from the City of Kigali and the concerned are those above 50 and those with chronic diseases aged between 30 and 49 and medical personnel,” reads a communique signed by Dr. Mpunga.

He said that the third dose for many is injected to patients after six months and can be considered the third dose for those who had received one vaccine such as those who got Johnson and Johnson jabs.

The third inoculation exercise comes as the World is experiencing a new variant of the COVID-19 pandemic known as Omicron. Rwanda has also suspended passengers from Southern African and imposed quarantine for people coming to Rwanda.

According to the statement from the cabinet meeting that convened on Sunday 28 November 2021, direct flights between Rwanda and southern African were temporarily suspended.

All arriving passengers must quarantine for 24 hours at a designated hotels and at their own cost while those originating from countries that have recently been affected should quarantine for seven days.

.Theoneste Sibomana, 54 and a resident in Kigali has been surprised by the decision and was still skeptical whether he was going to take the third vaccine.

“How many doses shall one get,” he wondered. “I think this is getting more serious and we need more details as I heard some people joking that one shall get more than 10 jabs,” he added.

At least Rwanda has vaccinated 5,948,620 people who received the first dose while 3,309,970 received both shots
