Meet the Woman breaking leaps and bounds in Alternative Healthcare in Ghana

June 02, 2021

In male-dominated industries, women are faced with the task of proving to themselves that they can make it and working twice as hard to get ahead.

With enthusiasm, strive, hard work, and consistency, some women are able to burst through the barriers of ‘male dominance’ and ascertain a stand out in business success. They become symbols of hope for younger girls and other women. Dr. Naa Asheley Dordor is one of such women.

Who is Naa Asheley Dordor?
Dr. Naa Asheley Dordor is a Chiropractic Physician. According to Spine-health, this is “a health care professional focused on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on treatment through manual adjustment and/or manipulation of the spine.”

She is the CEO of Nova Wellness Centre with the mission to “inspire members of our community to live anew through education, application of technology and excellent service,” and with the vision “that all will live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives – mind, body, and soul.”

Alternative Healthcare Treatment with Nova Wellness Centre

Her company, Nova Wellness Centre offers such services as DRX9000 spinal decompression, chiropractic, corporate wellness, general wellness, and weight management and spa services. Some of the conditions commonly treated include “headaches, neck, back, shoulder, waist pain, numbness in extremities, sciatica, scoliosis, among others.”

Her Entrepreneurial journey
Like most entrepreneurs and business owners, Dr Naa Asheley Dordor’s journey began with an interest, a passion. Her interest in alternative healthcare treatment and preventive medical services was jump-started prior to encountering chiropractic care while in college in Canada. This will later cause her to pursue the passion of becoming a chiropractic physician by attending Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport – Iowa, USA.

Her passion was further stoked after she and fellow students from the Chiropractic College went on a mission trip to Vietnam. During her trip, she experienced the potency of chiropractic care and the impact it had on general health. She thus resolved to bring this alternative medical knowledge to Ghana and provide a mind, body, and soul healing treatment to Ghanaians.

Coming to Ghana, she worked with the Spinal Clinic in Accra as a Chiropractic doctor for a year before establishing her chiropractic clinic, Nova Chiropractic Health Centre. This later transitioned to Nova Wellness Centre to emphasize the concept of total wellness. Her corporate health program has served employees of Omni Bank, Graphic Corporation, Rig World Services, Fidelity, and Stanbic bank, among others.

Dr Naa Asheley Dordor has also embarked on various government-funded training projects to aid Ghanaians on appropriate ergonomic practices and taking decisions regarding the use of electronic media, print, and online media platforms.

Awards and recognition
In 2018, Dr Naa Asheley Dordor was recognized for her commitment to the Chiropractic field by the Ghana 40under40 awards scheme. She was declared Woman Entrepreneur of the year by the Small Medium Enterprises Ghana Awards (SMEGA) Scheme.
At the just-ended 3rd Ghana-West Africa Business Excellence Awards (GWABEA) held in Accra on 21st May 2021, Dr Asheley Dordor was adjudged the Outstanding Executive of the Year in the Health and Wellness Category.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Dr. Asheley said “Like many other businesses, we were badly affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. The nature of our work demands very close contact with the patient so obviously many people stayed away. So, to come out of that and be recognized by the Ghana – West Africa Business Excellence Awards (GWABEA), I’m truly humbled.”

“The health and wellness industry in Ghana is growing and I always say Ghanaians deserve the best. We will continue to provide excellent service with state-of-the-art technology to treat musculoskeletal problems naturally. It is for this reason that we decided to invest in the DRX9000 Spinal decompression machine to treat disc problems causing severe low back pain and sciatica. This non-surgical treatment is safe and effective with minimal risks. It is a game-changer for not just Ghanaians but everybody in the sub-region and we hope that it will help with our medical tourism here in Ghana. Again, a million thanks to GWABEA for this recognition”, she further said.
