Malawi: Army Commander Nundwe reinstated by President Chakwera

By James Mwala

President Lazarus Chakwera has redeployed General Vincent Nundwe as Commander of the Malawi, months after his firing by former leader Peter Mutharika.

Nundwe was reportedly axed by Mutharika for his views about the need to let Malawians protests freely in the streets.

The protests came in line with events that led to calls for Jane Ansah to step down as Malawi Electoral Commission head, protests that marked historic events ahead of the June 23rd fresh presidential elections.

Nundwe who was replaced with Major General Andrew Lapken Namathanga, had reportedly been axed for allowing his men to protect demonstrators protesting the 2019 polls.

But in his address earlier this week, Chakwera said Nundwe’s dismissal was improper because it was without cause.

“In doing this, my purpose is to heal the injury and injustice of an unfair decision inflicted on our entire military as a professional institution,” said Chakwera.
